Prudes shouldn’t go into archeology. The patina of antiquity may make a carved ivory phallus, Venus figurine, or vulva painting on a cave wall priceless, communicating to us from a mute, distant past. But transplant those images to the modern world and you get dildos, Playboy, and Georgia O’Keefe. Still, most prehistoric erotic art is abstract, disembodied. It doesn’t explicitly depict sex-crazed ancients screwing their brains out for fun and fertility. But one little-known, mysterious archaeological site does. The Kangjiashimenji Petroglyphs are bas-relief carvings in a massive red-basalt outcropping in the remote Xinjiang region of northwest China. The artwork includes the earliest—and some of the most graphic—depictions of copulation in the world. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2013/02/prehistoric_pornography_chinese_carvings_show_explicit_copulation.html

Starting in the fall of 1943, photographer Ansel Adams chronicled the day-to-day existence of the people held at Manzanar. He was distressed that the lives of American citizens had been uprooted in such a way, and strove to capture on film the humanity of the detainees as they faced dehumanizing circumstances. "Nothing is more permanent about Manzanar than the dust which has lodged in its tar-papered barracks, except the indelible impression incised on the lives of thousands of its inhabitants," Adams wrote. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/16/ansel-adams-manzanar_n_5155579.html

Seed and Nursery Catalogs. The Seed and Nursery Catalogs collection includes covers from 250 of the over 10,000 seed and nursery catalogs held by the Libraries as part of our Trade Literatre collections. Many of the trade catalogs were part of the Burpee Collection, including both Burpee and competitors' catalogs, donated to the Smithsonian's Horticulture Services Division by Mrs. David Burpee in 1982. The real gems of the collection date from 1830 to the 1930s and are both beautiful and important publications that document the history of the seed and agricultural implement business and provide insight into the history of botany and plant research in the United States, through the introduction of plant varieties. Seed trade catalogs are also a window into the evolution of graphic arts in advertising and the changing fashions in flowers and vegetables. https://library.si.edu/image-gallery/collection/seed-and-nursery-catalogs

- Meet Dion Milam. The 30-year-old California inmate may be the scariest looking criminal TSG has ever seen. Milam, who wears "Aryan" and "Honor" tattoos above his eyebrows and a swastika tat on his neck, was charged yesterday in a methamphetamine case (his brother-in-law allegedly tried to mail the drug into the Stanislaus County Jail, where Milam is being held on a murder charge). This mug shot was taken earlier this year following Milam's arrest in the murder case. Milam, who pulled a gun on sheriff's deputies, got roughed up a bit as he resisted arrest.

Rongorongo /ˈrɒŋɡoʊˈrɒŋɡoʊ/ (Rapa Nui: [ˈɾoŋoˈɾoŋo]) is a system of glyphs discovered in the 19th century on Easter Island that appears to be writing or proto-writing. Numerous attempts at decipherment have been made, none successfully. Although some calendrical and what might prove to be genealogical information has been identified, none of these glyphs can actually be read. If rongorongo does prove to be writing and proves to be an independent invention, it would be one of very few independent inventions of writing in human history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rongorongo

- Turbine cresting Sherman Hill
Union Pacific gas turbine No. 75 exits the tunnels at Hermosa, Wyo., as it works its way over Sherman Hill with a westbound freight. This was the last of the 25 4,500 h.p. turbines, wheel arrangement B-B+B-B, built by GE for UP in 1954. The open walkway along the side led to these units being called “gallery” or “veranda” turbines.

- 1960 Sebring competitor, ex-Briggs Cunningham 1960 Maserati Tipo 61/60 “Birdcage” racer. To be sold during Mecum’s third Monterey auction event August 18-20, this sports racer is chassis number 2459. Like the less than 20 other Tipos 60 and 61 built in 1959-1960, this example is powered by a front-mid-mounted, all-aluminum 200hp, 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder with two Weber 45DC03 carburetors. This light engine sits in a tubular space frame chassis designed by engineer Giulio Alfieri; it’s made up of more than 200 individual 10-15mm-thick tubes, many of which are exposed in the aluminum-bodied car, giving the Maserati its “Birdcage” nickname. This ultra-light (sub 1,300-pound), purposeful car has advanced features like a five-speed manual gearbox, rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and a De Dion rear end. http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2011/06/24/briggs-cunninghams-maserati-birdcage-to-be-sold-in-monterey/

Pontiac, which built its first car in 1926, was G.M.'s also-ran division in the mid-1950s. Its cars were indistinct and boring. After Semon E. Knudsen became general manager, however, Pontiac began to develop more pronounced style. His early efforts produced the limited-edition Star Chief Custom Bonneville convertible. http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/12/20/automobiles/collectibles/20091220-pontiac_index.html http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/20/automobiles/collectibles/20pontiac.html?_r=1&ref=automobiles
