On May 19, 2013 the Yahoo board approved an US$1.1 billion purchase of blogging website Tumblr, and the firm's CEO and creator David Karp will stay a substantial investor. The statement apparently signifies a shifting trend in the technology sector, as big corporations like Yahoo, Facebook, and Google get startup Internet companies that create low amounts of sales as a means by which to join with sizeable, fast growing communities that are online. The Wall Street Journal said the purchase of Tumblr would meet the business's need for "a flourishing social networking and communications hub."[43][44] On May 20, the firm announced the acquisition of Tumblr formally.[45] The firm also announced plans to start a San Francisco office in July 2013.[46]
