General

Is it irony that one of the most important advances in history is the machine built to measure it? On the surface, it seems unlikely that a tangle of gears, springs and weights charged with something so mundane as ticking off fractions of a day could be imbued with so much romance, dressed in so many forms and be the main reason medieval squares across Europe have towers. Clocks are the crack dealer to our junkie-like obsession with the passage of time and, well, life. Here are few stops geared toward horophiles - and those who just need a fix. http://www.sfgate.com/travel/fiveplaces/article/5-places-where-it-s-all-about-time-4301248.php

10. Mojave art on the rocks, LITTLE PETROGLYPH CANYON, Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, Near Ridgecrest, Kern County. No one knows for sure who decorated Little Petroglyph Canyon with images out of a dreamscape, some thought to be more than 10,000 years old. Or why the basalt walls of a narrow wash in the bone-dry Coso Mountains at the northern edge of the Mojave became a magic canvas for flocks of bighorn sheep, hunters with bows and arrows poised and more. But the area is probably the richest Amerindian rock-art site in the hemisphere. To see the canyon, you must contact the Navy base or join a tour offered by Maturango Museum. It's a rough 40-mile drive to the trail head, followed by a hike and a scramble along the canyon. Visits only in spring and fall. Info: Maturango Museum, 100 E. At Feather Falls, euphoria happens. From the viewing deck, perched on a knife-edged outcrop, you can take in a full frontal view of 410-foot Feather Falls. The sound of pounding water reverberates off the high walls and thunders down the canyon. It's so perfect that it can seem surreal. But the side trip to the brink of the waterfall snaps you back into the moment. From a boulder near the rim, watch a churning fountain of white water surge past through a rocky gorge, pound down a chute and then pour over the top. The air tastes clean and sparkles as mist from the falls rises. You could search across America and pay thousands of dollars in travel costs but still not take in more ecstatic moments than one experiences at Feather Falls. Yet it's located in the Sierra foothills east of Oroville, within range of a long day trip for many people in the Bay Area, Sacramento, Tahoe and Redding. Plus, unlike the Yosemite Valley, it's all free - access, parking and a small campground. Pinnacles National Monument, a 26,000-acre swath of spectacular volcanic rock formations outside Soledad, Calif., would be elevated to a National Park under legislation introduced Thursday by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) Pinnacles is a nesting place for the endangered California condor, North America's largest soaring bird, with wingspans up to 10 feet. And it is a global destination for naturalists and outdoor adventurers attracted by the park's scenic views and unique rock-climbing landscapes. Making Pinnacles a National Park, Boxer said, would "draw even more visitors to this spectacular piece of California's natural and cultural heritage." http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/greenspace/2010/08/pinnacles-national-monument-california-parks.html

It is truly awesome to hike one of the many mountain trails that look out over the Ojai Valley to the Pacific Ocean and see the Channel Islands floating like clouds on the horizon. The thrill of coming upon deer, bear, or maybe even mountain lion tracks and even catching a glimpse of one of those magnificent creatures. Here is a place where a wide variety of birds and reptiles can be found in abundance. Culp Valley is at about mile 9.2 on Highway S-22. The turnoff to the spring, campgrounds and this lookout trail is on the north side, turning left when heading down into the desert. Drive in as far as you dare in a normal car; four-wheel-drive is highly recommended. This road ends with a circle parking area. Off the northeastern end of this parking area, you’ll see a sign for Pena Spring and the California Riding and Hiking Trail. The trail heads both north and south from here for 8 miles total, reaching from about 1.5 miles east of Ranchita off S-22 to about mile marker 16.5 off S-22, near the park headquarters. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar/24/take-hike-culp-valley/?page=2#article

Visiting Indian Hill gives us a renewed appreciation for this desert area. Humans have used the area for perhaps several thousand years. The last Indian cultural group to occupy this area was the Kumeyaay. It was later used by local cattlemen and, much later, beginning in 1912, by construction crews of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway — the “Impossible Railroad” — who dug tunnels, laid track, and built a large wooden trestle through Carrizo Gorge to connect with San Diego. Their construction camp was located near what is marked as Indian Hill on the USGS topographic map. The “real” Indian Hill, however, is another rocky hill to the southeast with a large shelter and morteros on its north side. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2015/apr/08/roam-indian-hill/#

Mortero Palms to Goat Canyon To Get there: From Interstate 8 at Ocotillo, drive 4 miles northwest on Highway S-2 to the unpaved Dos Cabezas Road on the left, signed EC119. You should see a field of windmills and one of the first buildings you will pass will be a tower and a maintenance yard for Siemens who takes care of the Ocotillo Wind project. Go south on this road and veer right after 1.1 miles. Continue another 4.5 miles west, staying north of the tracks, and look for the paved railroad crossover on the left. Cross to the south side of the tracks, and continue west a short distance. Then veer left ( southwest, away from the tracks) and proceed 0.9 miles to a road fork. Bear left there, and stay left again after another 0.3 miles. Drive 0.4 miles further (past an isolated, rocky hill on the left, and turn right toward Mortero Palms. Go 0.5 miles to the roads end overlooking a wide wash. Trailhead ( warning – do not use google maps to tell you the directions to the trailhead, it will take you the long way around. Also realize that Google earth and Google maps do not show the windmills) http://www.ihikesandiego.com/mortero-palms-goat-canyon/

From the Sacatone Overlook area you can view Carrizo Gorge, which is theRailroad cars fallen off of the tracks narrow southern section of Carrizo Canyon. If you look across the gorge, you can see a portion of the San Diego to Arizona Railroad also referred to as "The Impossible Railroad". If you have a pair of binoculars, you may see some old railroad cars that have been abandoned on the hillside below the track. Near the overlook point is an old abandoned mine called "The School Mine." Do not enter the mine. It can be extremely dangerous. Poisonous gases within mines and open mine shafts can be life-threatening hazards. The Sacatone Overlook is located on Sacatone Spring Road, which leaves McCain Valley Road 2.8 miles north of Old Highway 80. http://www.desertusa.com/mccain/oct_mcain.html https://goo.gl/maps/77Fsm

Save Our Heritage Organisation http://sohosandiego.org/index.htm

Hi folks, we would like to invite you to come on out, take a step back in time, when things weren't so hectic. Take a ride to the country, take a free tour of our auto barns, walk or drive our 25 acre family owned nursery. Use your vehicle as a shopping cart. Don't forget we have a long tradition of always giving our guests a nice cold apple, before they leave. Hope to see you here! http://www.simpsonsnursery.com/

Running out of gas in undiscovered East County. Summer 2008 may be remembered as a season of disappointment, when gasoline prices topped $4 a gallon, energy market distortions spilled over into grocery prices, and families had to give up expensive vacation plans. How sad. Summer 2008 may be remembered fondly as the time we discovered the East County we thought we knew but seldom stopped to enjoy. “Staycation”, enjoying inexpensive outings close to home, has leapt into our vocabulary. How nice. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080531/news_lz1ez31gas.html

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, owned and operated by the city of Carlsbad, isn't just a 27-acre vestige of Carrillo's original 3,000-acre spread preserved for today's suburbanites to stroll around. It's also a place where a dedicated group of aficionados keeps his legacy alive. This month, for instance, it's home to a film festival showing the venerated actor's films. Best known as a co-star of the popular TV series “The Cisco Kid,” Carrillo was a civic activist who helped the state acquire such parkland as Hearst Castle, near San Simeon. http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/sep/13/pancho-would-be-so-proud/?northcounty

National City

National City on splendid display

The very year, 1868, that Alonzo E. Horton was founding New Town San Diego – today's downtown – Frank Kimball and his brothers were founding National City. They bought the old 26,632-acre Rancho de la Nación, a grazing ground in Mexican days, for $30,000 (just over $1 per acre, three times what Horton paid per acre) and set about founding industries and community institutions. To celebrate the founding days, local history buffs Marilyn Carnes and Matthew Nye assembled dozens of old photos into “Images of America: Early National City,” the latest in Arcadia Publishing's paperbacks on San Diego places. The Kimballs left New Hampshire in 1861 and settled in Oakland, where they were active in Civil War-era construction. With post-war prospects booming and propelled by the completion of the transcontinental railroad, they moved to San Diego. They established a lumberyard, built homes and farms and in the 1870s Frank was instrumental in enticing the extension of railroad service to San Diego with National City as the terminus. Before the boom of the 1880s went bust, Frank's net worth soared to $1.4 million, the equivalent of $30 million in today's money by one measurement. In the downturn, he lost everything and had to live in an apartment and, at age 70, make a living through manual labor, the authors said. But the Kimballs left behind stately mansions, some economic engines of growth and a heritage of philanthropy. Among the interesting photos in the book, well explained in lengthy captions, are such early businesses as Gus E. Schwenke's shoe store (the line of boots and shoes resemble today's shoe lineups in department stores); the Otay Watch Works, operated for only eight months in 1890, its first edition of 1,200 watches named the “Frank Kimball”; and impressive Victorian homes, some of which are still knockouts today. The Arcadia books on San Diego-area places and subjects are available at many local bookstores. Amtrak was typical: I asked for a window seat on the right and the clerk whined and shuffled paper and when I got onboard the seat was on the left. The train was almost an hour late getting into Oakland.

The Waterfront Motel was good location and a great view.

The train ride in Niles Canyon was very nice.

I took BART to the airport. The station was 0.7 miles so kind of a long walk but then just 15 minutes to the terminal.

The Los Angeles Police Museum has been named one of the "Most Awesome Museums" by Red Tricycle, an organization that promotes child-friendly activities. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck plans to highlight the award Thursday at the museum in the old Highland Park police station at 6045 York Blvd. "The nation's preeminent Police Museum, the LA Police Museum, shares LAPD's rich history via an engaging audio tour and numerous fascinating exhibits," wrote Red Tricycle. "This is the perfect place to take your kiddo who can't get enough of learning about the 'good guys,' and children 12 and under get free admission." Mug shots, jail cells and exhibits, such as one on the 1997 North Hollywood shooting, make the museum a unique window into the LAPD's history, with generations of police vehicles. The old police station has been featured in several movies and TV shows. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-la-police-museum-awesome-child-activities-20130905,0,6277401.story http://goo.gl/maps/a4YxL

Antelope is the most visited slot canyon in the Southwest, partly because it is easily accessible and by far the most publicized, and also since it is extremely beautiful, with just the right combination of depth, width, length, rock color and ambient light; many other slot canyons are deeper, narrower or longer, and some have rock that is even more colorful and sculptured, but here conditions are ideal. http://www.americansouthwest.net/slot_canyons/antelope_canyon/index.html

“In Portland it’s almost like cars don’t exist, right? They ride bikes! They ride double-decker bikes! They ride unicycles! They ride trams, they ride skateboards!" — Carrie, Portlandia Carrie, the female protagonist of the comedy series Portlandia, has one thing right: in Portland, Oregon, it’s easy to get around without a car. Thanks to a commitment to transit-oriented development, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure investments, the second-largest city in the Pacific Northwest has developed an expansive, popular public transportation system. City-based transit ridership grew almost twice as fast as the population and three times faster than expansions in transit service between 1996 and 2006. Eighty-six percent of riders choose TriMet over driving, and transit ridership remains high throughout the week—even on weekends. http://smartercities.nrdc.org/topic/transportation/portland-oregon
